≡ Abaft, by Lisa Fay (2006)

The nautical term meaning to the back of or toward the stern points to the
changing relationship between the two on stage and also to the viewer
viewing the piece. A continual reorienting and shifting of reference
points take place not only in space but in time as well. As framed and
frame become exchanged so too does the meter and consequent rhythms found
in the piece by the listening viewer. These references to time and space
become working metaphors for social relationships between the two as we
watch the “course of direction” both of the individuals and of the two as
a duet. The piece asks “Who are we in relation to one another, given that
each of us is always changing?”
